Azumanga Who, commonly shortened by the author to Azu-Who, is the first fanfiction written by Daniel Benfield. The focus is mostly Daniel and his three adopted daughters – Hannah, Rebekah, and Sarah – and their journey in Japan as they meet and befriend the crazy people who make up the other half of the title.

This story is based on not only Doctor Who and the "central three years" of Azumanga Daioh, but a Who-based idea that Daniel had several years prior and another story that he wrote and refined over the course of seventeen years.

Script Version (5/24/08 – 3/9/09)[]

The first version was very basic, using a relatively-barren script-esque format. 31 chapters were uploaded, mostly during Summer 2008, and was pulled from Fan-Fiction.Net on March 9, 2009 due to being a script.

Novel Version (12/8/08 – 10/2/09)[]

Keeping with the Doctor Who tradition of televised stories being translated into a novel (sometimes by the original script-writer), Azumanga Who began a novelization attempt by Daniel on December 9, 2008 for DeviantART. The revamped version features more details and all-new scenes, plus "scene headers" similar to Azumanga Daioh as well as chapter titles.

The intent was to have two distinct versions – scripts for FFN, novels for DA – until the script version was taken down. Prior to their removal in October 2009, only the first four chapters were available on DA; since then, Daniel began work on another revamp (called a "re-revamp"), using a third-person perspective for more creative freedom.

Although the author originally had no intention of leaving the story unfinished, a declining interest in the story (both by himself and others) has led to an infinite postponement.
